General English

The General English (108128J) course is designed to prepare students for conversation, everyday situations and daily interactions that take place when travelling or living in an English speaking country.

Students learn and practice the four macro-skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking in an interactive environment. Levels of difficulty increase over the duration of the course to assist students to develop their skills and to be more confident and fluent in English.

Each of the levels has a duration of 10 weeks (the study period) and the course in total is 60 weeks with 10 weeks of breaks. Students are required to attend a minimum 20 scheduled course contact hours per week.

The General English (108128J) course is made up of 60 units of study, each of which is delivered over a week. All teaching and assessment is conducted in the classroom (20 hours a week).

Teaching methods include teacher directed and student-centred learning. Delivery will be flexible taking into account the different learning styles, cultures and needs of students. Macro-skills will be developed using communicative and integrated techniques.

A combination of the following delivery methods will be used: presentations, discussions, role-plays, oral presentations, individual and group instruction, audio visual materials, web-based research, online activities and independent research.

Students will use authentic materials, together with materials prepared specifically for language learning within the classroom.

Students are placed at the appropriate level (Starter, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced) and will progress from one level to the next subject to achieving a satisfactory pass mark in the summative assessments.

Both formative and summative assessments will be used to assess achievement of learner outcomes.

Assessments will be formative to assist in assessing a student’s ongoing progress and summative for a final assessment of the student’s ability.

In our General English (108128J) you will also develop your ability to communicate clearly in English along with a variety of useful language skills including :

  • Fluency in spoken language
  • Communication skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • Pronunciation
  • Vocabulary expansion
  • Grammar usage

There are no pre-requisites for General English (108128J) qualification specified in the training package at the time of publication, as entry into this level is based on assessment of English language proficiency.

Apsley College has the following entry requirements:

International students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Students will be assessed at orientation using the Oxford Placement Test and an interview. They will then be placed in the appropriate class level as follows:
  • Students who have none or very little English will be placed in the Starter class level.
  • Students who are assessed as having English that matches the descriptors for A1 on the CEFR level will be placed in the Elementary class level.
  • Students are assessed as having English that matches the descriptors for A2 on the CEFR level will be placed in the Pre-Intermediate class level.
  • Students who are assessed as having English that matches the descriptors for B1 on the CEFR level will be placed in the Intermediate class level.
  • Students who are assessed as having English that matches the descriptors for B2 on the CEFR level will be placed in the Upper Intermediate class level.

Students who are assessed as having English that matches the descriptors for C1 on the CEFR level will be placed in the Advanced class level.

Non AQF Award.

Students who complete our General English (108128J) course at an intermediate level will be able to undertake educational or vocational courses.

Level

Course learning outcomes

Beginner

At Starter level, the course is based on survival type English which a beginner student needs to learn to communicate following arrival in an English speaking country. On completion of this level, students will be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases, will be able to introduce him or herself and others, as well as ask and answer questions about personal details. Students will also be able to interact in a simple way when the other person speaks slowly and clearly and repeats or clarifies information as needed.

Pre-Intermediate

Completion of the Elementary course will enable students to be able to understand and use sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (for example, basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Students will also be able to communicate in situations requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

Intermediate

Completion of the Pre-Intermediate level will enable students to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure and other familiar situations. They will also be able to write simple, connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, as well as describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and give brief reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Upper Intermediate

Completion of the Intermediate level will enable students to understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics. Students will be able to interact with some fluency and spontaneity, making regular interaction with native speakers relatively easy. They will also be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a current issue, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Advanced

Completion of the Upper Intermediate level will enable students to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, as well as recognise implicit meaning. Students will also be able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously, use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. In addition, students will be able to produce clear, well-structured and detailed text on complex subjects and demonstrate controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Mastery

Completion of the Advanced level will enable students to understand with ease virtually everything heard or said and can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Students can also express themselves spontaneously, fluently and precisely and differentiate finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
